UT Services for Students : What Parents Should Know

The University of Toledo provides students with a multitude of resources to help them through their college career. Whether your student is a little under the weather, needs help finding an internship or is simply looking for a new way to spend their free time, there is an organization or office on campus that can help!

 

Office of Accessibility

If your student has a disability, UT’s Office of Accessibility may be able to help. The office provides services for qualified individuals with all types of disabilities, including learning disabilities. The Office of Accessibility provides the following accommodations and support services for qualified students:

In order to determine eligibility for the services of the Office of Accessibility, an admitted student must present documentation of their disability (by fax or by mail) that meets Office of Accessibility guidelines. A professional will review the documentation and the student will complete an intake interview.

Career Services

Your goal, as well as your student’s, is for your student to earn their higher degree and find the job of their dreams, right? Career Services is there to help you both reach that goal! Career Services, located in the Student Union, helps students find an on- or off-campus part-time job, plan their careers, find internships and post-graduation positions, as well as helping with decisions about graduate school. They offer services such as: career counseling, educational programs, recruiting services, resume help, interviewing skills, job searching aids, up-to-date resources on the latest trends, and communications between University, community, employers and students. Career Services will help put your student’s education into action!

Counseling Services

The University of Toledo Counseling Center offers free counseling services to UT students. Services include walk-in counseling, support groups, individual and couples counseling, outreach, consulting, training and more! There is even a psychiatrist available at the Student Medical Center on a weekly basis that can write prescriptions if necessary. The Counseling Center can help your student cope with stress that may come from adjusting to college or from their personal life.

Dining Services

Whether your student is a health nut or addicted to junk food, their food cravings will be satisfied by UT’s Dining Services. Starbucks, Subway, KFC, and Magic Wok are only a few examples of some of the fast-food chains located directly on campus, not to mention the all-you-can-eat cafeterias! With so many options, your student will never be able to complain that there’s nothing to eat.

Is money management not your child’s strong suit? Don’t worry! With UT’s Meal Plans you can be assured that there will always be money for food. Freshman residents can choose from two continuous dining meal plans to fit their specific needs. Also, no cash is involved. Students merely use their Rocket ID card to pay for meals at any of the University’s dining venues.

Eberly Center for Women

Women at The University of Toledo and surrounding communities benefit from the actions of the Catherine S. Eberly Center for Women. The Center advocates for women’s equity in education, work and health. Every Thursday from 12:30-1:30, brownbag lunch sessions are held, open to students, staff, faculty and community members to gather together for lunch and listen to a guest speaker and discuss hot topics in the world and women’s rights. Many other services are also provided such as assertiveness training for women, financial literacy classes, and personal enrichment and career development opportunities.

First Year Experience

Adjusting to college isn’t always easy. Students are faced with a higher level of education and take on more responsibility while adapting to a new environment. This is why The University of Toledo has created its First Year Experience (FYE) initiative to help ease the challenges your student may encounter in their first year of college. UT’s FYE Office organizes events, provides support and connects first-year students to other beneficial offices, organizations or programs on campus. International Student Services

The University of Toledo makes international students feel at home with the help of the Office of International Student Services (OISS). The OISS assists students with new student orientation, locating housing, making cultural adjustments, immigration information and personal emergencies. They also house the American Language Institute, which offers intensive English language courses and cultural orientation to individuals and companies. Students from the U.S. can also benefit from the Office of International Student Services by learning about the cultures and traditions of other countries or by befriending international students and helping them adjust to the American culture.

Multicultural Student Center

The Multicultural Student Center strives to recruit and retain students of various cultures. While programs are geared towards African American, Asian American, Latino American and Native American students, the Multicultural Student Center benefits all the University community by fostering understanding, acceptance and cross-cultural communication.

African-American Student Enrichment Initiatives Office

African-American students at UT can take advantage of the African-American Student Enrichment Initiatives Office (AASEIO), located in the Student Union. The AASEIO offers academic, cultural, social, and personal support to help students succeed. Each week African-American students are invited to attend an interactive workshop addressing issues related to success in college. The AASEIO staff works closely with University academic advisers and connects students with other services offered to help students excel in college. They also provide mentorship opportunities, student leaders, and social activities with other African Americans on campus and in the community.

Latino Initiatives

The University of Toledo’s Office of Latino Initiatives serves Latino students, faculty staff and community members by raising scholarship funds, guiding 6-12 grade students as they plan and prepare for college through the Latino Youth Summit and more. Primos is a mentoring program which pairs UT upperclassmen with incoming freshman to help guide them with their transition to college. The Latino Initiatives Office offers various programs and services to help Latinos succeed at UT.

Office of Recreation

Your student can enrich their mind, body and spirit through student-centered recreational and health promotion programs and services offered by the Office of Recreation at UT. Activities promote social interaction within the culturally diverse University community and challenge students to explore their limits, experience achievement and practice stress-management techniques. The Office of Recreation offers a wide variety of activities - intramural sports, aerobics, spinning classes, fitness testing and weight training programs are just a few examples. They also sponsor swim lessons, American Red Cross Certification Agenda, and Team Building Programs.

Office of Residence Life

The University of Toledo’s Office of Residence Life provides quality living environments and services that directly contribute to the success of students through educational, social and personal development. They strive to make sure your student is provided with safe and supportive on-campus communities that promote the development of life and leadership skills. Continuous improvements are made to the twelve furnished on-campus residence halls to improve the quality of your student’s residential experience. The Office of Residence Life also offers specific housing like Living Learning Communities, Service Learning, Academic Cluster Floors, Alcohol and Substance Free Environments and International Housing to meet the various needs of students.

Commuter and Off-Campus Services

The University of Toledo stays in-touch with our local community. The Office of Commuter and Off-Campus Services always keeps an up-to-date list of available housing options in the area for students. They will help your student find an apartment, house or duplex to rent within their “college-student budget” as well as provide tips for renting, roommate connections, and information on local events.

Remember!! All full-time freshman and sophomore students who are not living with parents or relatives are required to live on UT’s campus. If you have any questions or concerns about the University’s housing policy, please contact the Office of Residence Life at 419.530.2941 or 800.5TOLEDO.

Student Health Services

If your student feels a little under the weather or simply needs a checkup, Health and Wellness professionals are located directly on campus to offer convenient and affordable medical, psychological and health educational attention. The Student Medical Center is open for business Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is even an on-site pharmacy so your student can fill their prescription within minutes after it is prescribed! The Student Medical Center’s pharmacy also accepts outside prescriptions by phone and can keep a supply of a student’s chronic medication on hand to ensure it is available when necessary. Student Health Services also offer lab services, an immunization and allergy injection clinic, HIV/AIDS testing, gynecology services, urgent care services, primary care services, prevention programs, outreach and of course, confidentiality.

Student Unions

The University of Toledo has two student unions, the Bancroft Student Union and the Scott Park Student Center. Both the Student Union and the Student Center are the heart of community life and bring campus unity to The University of Toledo for students, faculty, staff and visitors. The student unions house a majority of the cultural, educational, social, leadership and recreational services offered at UT. Whether your student is looking for something to eat, needs to buy their textbooks, or participating in a campus event, the Student Union and the Student Center are the places to go!

Apple Tree Child Care

Apple Tree Nursery School, Inc. provides child-care services to The University of Toledo’s students, parents, faculty and staff. Apple Tree has two centers that care for children from 6 weeks to 5 years old through a staff of over 20 qualified teachers with early childhood training. They aim to help the growth of the WHOLE child through enhancing children physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually and creatively. Children of Apple Tree learn in an environment that is rich with stimulating developmental activities focused on the child’s specific developmental level.

Student Ombuds

The term “ombudsman” refers to public officials appointed to investigate citizens’ complaints against governmental agencies. The University of Toledo’s Student Ombuds acts as an independent, impartial and confidential party to investigate student complaints and help achieve equitable settlements. The ombudsmen serve as an alternative means of dispute resolution by which issues may be raised, considered, given appropriate referral and/or resolved. If your student should encounter an academic issue or problem and is unsure of what they should do, The Student Ombuds Office is the place to go!

Upward Bound Program

The University of Toledo reaches out to disadvantaged low-income and/or first generation students attending public and/or parochial high schools in the Toledo area through The Upward Bound Program. Upward Bound is an academic pre-college program, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, that provides tutoring, workshops, classroom instruction, and college visitations. Upward Bound provides assistance with ACT/SAT test prep, financial aid paperwork, college applications, and locating scholarships. With the help of The Upward Bound Program low income high school and/or first generation college students are prepared and motivated to be successful at the college or university of their choice!

Student Support Services

Student Support Services (SSS) continues the work of The Upward Bound Program by assisting eligible low-income and first-generation students as they attend college. SSS offers study-skill courses, multicultural social events, individual academic advising, tutoring, career and social adjustment counseling and much more! They urge students to utilize the wealth of other services offered to UT students to help them succeed, complete their college degree and assume leadership roles in their communities.

Student Organizations

There’s always something for your student to do at The University of Toledo! With over 180 student organizations – from social to professional, religious to athletic – there is something for every interest. Intramural sports, Circle K (a service organization), and the National Pan-Hellenic Council are just a few examples of organizations that students can join. The student activities Web site provides a complete list of all student organizations located on and off campus.

Bookstore

The University of Toledo has three student bookstores, making it convenient for your student to purchase their textbooks, school supplies, UT Rocket apparel and more! The main bookstore is located in the Student Union on the Bancroft Campus and two smaller branches are housed at the Scott Park Campus and the Center for Visual Arts. Whether your student needs to buy their biology book, a sweatshirt for the next home football game, or a birthday card, the student bookstore is the place to go!
